Traditionally, a t-shirt is a one-dimensional item of clothing that is often worn for comfort and convenience.  For the purposes of this study, a t-shirt becomes a multi-dimensional tool for change using a mixed methodological approach to determine value. Unwanted t-shirts are one of the most sustainable and abundant materials in post modern culture.  Repurposing them into unique clothing items that reflect beauty in art and design adds the first layer of value. The sustainability of the materials make each item innate with good intention. A deeper analysis within this model reveals more opportunities for learning and value creation between those involved. In particular, a comparative analysis of boundary objects and Ancient Egyptian Temple Networks are to be explored.

the history

thehauteghetto is a movement birthed from the idea that one can create their own freedom and untie themselves from mainstream convention, politics and unfair practices. As a conscious fashion brand, thehauteghetto makes it possible for one to disrupt the status quo and bring healing to disparate, displaced, migrant and asylum communities.  By providing opportunities to those in the Atlantic world who have been unfairly affected by centuries of inequality and exploitation, we aim to redefine economic trade by using sustainable materials, creating culturally sensitive work environments and building meaningful commercial relationships where everyone feels supported, understood and heard.

the present

As a pan-African social enterprise, thehautghetto business model was created to embody a ‘meta-capitalist’ approach to trade and commerce. We recognise that the detachment and excesses of the post-modern era need to be re-balanced with principles that support equality and appreciation for the environment and mankind.

As we work within the Atlantic world to re-establish commercial relationships in an ethical and loving manner and are documenting the value in these interactions by collecting quantitative and qualitative data using scientific methodologies that can affectively measure the impact of intercultural exchange and pan-African business models.

the future

By having honest, pure intention from the onset, it is hoped that we not only re-establish the love we have for each other, but also the love we have with ourselves and the environment as a whole.  By weaving this intention into our approach, we are evolving the social enterprise business model into a multi-dimensional catalyst for healing, pleasure activism and practice-based research.

The interactions will be assessed using a value-creation framework to allow for a deeper analysis and critical reflection.  As a boundary object, thehauteghetto model utilises black art as the primary tools for achieving transformation and understanding within the communities it serves.
